Through most of the 20th century, canaries were used in coal mines to detect unsafe levels of toxic gases. When a canary became ill, miners knew they needed to exit the mine quickly. Since then, the expression "canary in a coal mine" has become shorthand for pointing out symptoms of looming crises.
